Onsite vs offsite retail media at a glance
Both are sold by the same retail media network. They differ in where the ad runs, what triggers it, and how results are measured.
| Onsite | Offsite | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the ad runs | The retailer's own site and app: search results, product pages, homepage | Inventory outside the retailer's shopping site and app, mostly owned by others: open web, social, CTV, digital out-of-home |
| What triggers it | The shopper's search, category, or product page | Audience segments built from the retailer's purchase and browsing data |
| How it is bought | The retailer's ad console; sponsored products are cost-per-click | Programmatically, usually through a DSP; CPM or CPC |
| Main job | Conversion at the digital shelf | Reach, remarketing, and new-to-brand prospecting |
| Measurement | Closed loop inside the retailer's own sales data | Retailer sales matched to exposure, plus partner-reported delivery |
| Retailer margin (BCG estimate, 2022) | 70% to 90% | 20% to 40% after media costs |
| Walmart Connect example | Sponsored Search, Onsite Display | Offsite Media through Walmart's DSP |
Amazon's Sponsored Products appear in shopping results and on product detail pages and charge per click, and its display ads bill per click or per 1,000 viewable impressions. The IAB/MRC guidelines ask networks to report onsite and offsite viewability separately; closed-loop attribution covers the onsite side. The margin ranges are BCG estimates from 2022, explained under retail media monetization.
How offsite retail media works
IAB Europe defines offsite retail media as the use of retailer first-party data to buy advertising on inventory outside the retailer's web and app shopping platforms, in most cases through biddable activity powered by customer audiences. Formats include display, social, digital out-of-home, advanced TV, and video.
The buying usually runs through a demand-side platform. Walmart's DSP is powered by The Trade Desk and reaches Walmart shoppers on the open web, social media, CTV, audio, and gaming, with reports tied to verified Walmart transactions online. Amazon's display ads run in the Amazon store and on Twitch and third-party apps and websites, using audiences built from Amazon's shopping signals. See the Walmart RMN products profile.
Is offsite advertising really retail media?
The industry standards say yes. The IAB/MRC guidelines cover ads that appear onsite, offsite, online, and in-store; BCG defines a retail media network as selling owned (onsite) and paid (offsite) media; and IAB and PwC count retailer ads on other sites as commerce media.
Our practitioner view is narrower. Retail media works best where a product is promoted on the retail site where the shopper buys it, and offsite behaves more like retargeting with retailer data. One use is remarketing: Amazon's views remarketing tactic re-engages shoppers who viewed a product and did not buy, with placements on Twitch and third-party sites. BCG's retailer playbook ties offsite to fueling traffic back to the owned site and to retargeting products. We treat offsite as an adjacent capability and hold it to the standards of any programmatic buy. IAB Europe lists audience relevance and revenue beyond the retailer's own traffic among its benefits.
When to use onsite vs offsite
Start onsite when the goal is sales on that retailer. The ad appears in shopping results and on product pages, where the shopper decides.
Add offsite when onsite auctions get crowded or expensive. Gildan's head of connected commerce, quoted by eMarketer in March 2026, said ad density had reached up to 50% on key apparel channels and CPAs were up double-digit percentages in some cases. Offsite also serves reach and new-customer goals, two benefits advertisers cite in The Trade Desk's research. Target says more than 30% of Roundel partner media spend ran outside Target's owned platforms in 2025; the Target Roundel guide covers both options.
Test offsite with a holdout before scaling it, because remarketing audiences can include people who would have bought anyway. Incrementality is the yardstick, with separate KPIs for each part of the plan.
Why it matters for brands and sellers
The split is a budget decision, and the two sides are measured differently. The IAB/MRC guidelines recommend SKU-level reporting for retail media generally. Offsite adds a second layer: delivery metrics that partners report, which networks should disclose and report separately from onsite. IAB Europe noted in 2024 that measuring on-site and off-site campaigns together was difficult. Compare an offsite ROAS with an onsite ROAS only on matching attribution windows.
IAB and PwC call off-site activation one of the fastest-growing components of commerce media. For sellers on several networks, plan onsite retailer by retailer and hold offsite to incremental sales. The networks hub, the Amazon RMN profile, and the retail media budget planning guide help size each side.

Frequently asked questions
What is an example of offsite retail media?
Walmart Connect showing ads to Walmart shopper audiences on connected TV, social media, or the open web, through its DSP powered by The Trade Desk, is offsite retail media. So is an Amazon display ad that re-engages a shopper who viewed a product, shown on Twitch or a third-party website.
What is onsite retail media?
Onsite retail media is advertising on the retailer's own website and app. It covers sponsored products and sponsored brands in search results, plus display ads on the homepage and product pages. Sponsored products are priced per click, and Walmart Connect sells this inventory as Sponsored Search and Onsite Display.
Is offsite retail media the same as retargeting?
In our view, offsite retail media often works like retargeting. Amazon's views and purchases remarketing tactics, for example, re-engage shoppers who already viewed or bought a product, on third-party inventory. The IAB/MRC guidelines still count offsite as retail media. Either way, judge offsite campaigns by the incremental sales they add.
How is offsite retail media measured?
The retailer matches ad exposure to its own sales data, alongside media metrics such as viewable impressions, video completion rate, and click-through rate. IAB/MRC guidance says offsite measurement may come from partners and should be disclosed, so compare it with onsite results carefully before moving budget.
